India Garden on Atwood Street is perhaps one of the busiest Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh.

And with good reason, too. This spacious restaurant offers above average food, friendly service, a decent bar, good desserts and yes, it's open really long hours (until 1AM).

We like our drink with our food but without the BYOB hassles and India Garden's full bar is an enticing come-on for folks like us.

India Garden's menu covers an extensive terrain of North Indian food, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian (this place is not for the Idli-Dosa lovers).

Go for the Tandoori Vegetables, Mutter Paneer and Chicken Makhani, all of which stand out on a fairly lengthy menu. We liked the Bombay Aloo too.

Tandoori Vegetables are an uncommon sight at Indian restaurants where the staple is Tandoori Chicken.

But our vote for the best entree at India Garden would go to the Chicken Karahi Laajwaab (fillet of chicken cooked in an Indian wok with chopped tomatoes, onions and garlic and delicately spiced). In an earlier age, it would have been the kind of dish cooked solely for emperors.

Tandoori Chicken at India Garden was just passable as was the Zucchini Masala. For the best Tandoori Chicken in Pittsburgh, we recommend Taj Mahal on McKnight Road. It's in a class of its own.

But skip the Bhindi Masala and Baingan Bartha - they seemed to have been rushed out of the kitchen in a tearing hurry with little thought to taste.

Make sure to try the desserts at India Garden.

We tried Chocolate Barfi, Rice Kheer and Tootie Frootie Salad. Our LDL Cholesterol be damned, we enjoyed them all. Since India Garden's sweetmaker also supplies the sweets counter at the adjacent Indian grocery store Bombay Mart, we purchased a pound of assorted sweets at the store later.

Perhaps, one reason for the crowds we saw at India Garden is that the restaurant offers 50% off dinners and 20% off take-outs between 4PM-6PM and between 10PM-1AM. With their smaller wallets, more than a few students are attracted by the discount program.

India Garden is one of the few Indian restaurants that has a decent bar.

No sooner were we seated, than we ordered a Margarita. Our drink came in a tall glass unlike the smaller Margarita glasses you usually see in most bars.

We loved the India Garden Margarita. Just what you need to unwind after a long, stressful day. - RR
